The Optical Wavelength Labs F7+M Fiber OWL 7+ is a highly accurate hand-held optical power meter, capable of performing a wide range of functions from simple optical power and loss measurements to OTDR testing to full-featured standards-based multimode Tier 2 (OTDR) link certification (when used with a WaveSource Pro light source, sold separately).

The Fiber OWL 7+ features a large color LCD display and 10-button keypad for easy data entry. The universal detector port comes with two adapters: 2.5mm for ST, SC, and FC; and 1.25mm for LC, MU, and other SFF connectors. The VFL and length testing port is LC.

The Fiber OWL 7+ is powered by a lithium polymer re-chargeable battery that can operate for up to 50 hours; a built-in auto shutdown feature helps extend its battery life.

The Fiber OWL 7+ includes a built-in Link Wizard that configures the meter for full-featured standards-based Tier 2 (OTDR) link certification. Each fiber run is stored with link name, date of test, cabling standard, fiber type, fiber length, reference value (for up to two wavelengths), reference cable type, connections, splices, and temperature.

In addition, the meter will store up to 10,000 measured data points with labels. The stored information can be selectively viewed, edited (measured again), printed, or deleted. All stored data can be downloaded through the USB port to a PC via the included OWLView certification software.

The F7+M Optical Power Meter has been configured with a precision-coupled visual fault locator that is optimized for fiber optics. Its high-intensity red laser allows for fiber identification up to 25 kilometers away. This VFL port can also be used to check for faults within a few feet of its launch point. When the bright red light encounters a fault, the light is deflected into the jacket, producing a red glow at the point of the fault.

OWLView Software

Fiber OWL 7+ Tier 2 certification test results can be downloaded to OWLView certification software. OWLView software includes a comprehensive set of features for all of your certification requirements:

  • Tier 1 certification
  • Tier 2 certification
  • IEC 61300-3-35 endface quality analysis

All together, these three reports can be combined into a comprehensive Tri-report. Tri-reports are quickly becoming a requirement for modern installers that want to stay competitive in bidding for big corporate and government jobs, or when applying for long-term cabling system warranties.
