Borescopes are optical tools for viewing objects that are difficult to see or access without damaging the item of interest. These tools are commonly ridged or flexible in length, contain a light source to illuminate the target, contain an optical system, and an eyepiece or monitor to view the captured image. They are useful for examining the condition of industrial systems and equipment; for ascertaining the quality of manufactured parts; and for locating contraband or intelligence for law enforcement purposes. Other common inspection applications include the internal viewing of turbine engines, pipes, gear boxes, or any foreign object retrieval.
Depending on the application, there are two basic types of optical light microscopes to choose from: compound (high power) and stereo (low power). If you need to view the internal structure of a cell, you will require the high magnification settings and increased optical resolution of a compound microscope. If you need to examine large objects (for example, solder joints on circuit boards), stereo microscopes are the right choice. A stereo microscope also features a wider field of view, relatively low magnification settings, and bigger focusing distances.
